Chapter 53 Begging Her
Chapter 53 Begging Her
Two minutes after Song Yafei left my ward, Xu Hu came to my ward.
His appearance was sudden, and I was quite surprised.
On second thought, he must have learned the news from Lin Qiuran.
Upon seeing Xu Hu, I hid my wrist under the blanket, not wanting him to see it.
Otherwise, he might accidentally let it slip to the headmistress, causing her worry.
Xu Hu knew about my condition; he probably thought I was hospitalized because I had a relapse.
He brought some fruit and placed it on the bedside table.
After inquiring about my condition, Xu Hu sat down beside me, remaining silent and withdrawn.
But he looked very uneasy, as if he was hiding something.
The only thing that could make Xu Hu choose to hide from me is the orphanage.
I asked him directly, "Xu Hu, has something happened at the orphanage? Or is it the director?"
Xu Hu hesitated, looking very troubled.
But the more he acted like this, the more anxious I became.
The fact that he's in a difficult position only means the situation is serious.
"Xu Hu, has something happened at the orphanage? You must tell me what's going on. Don't listen to the director and keep it from me, only telling me good news and not bad!"
Xu Hu scratched his head in distress, looking quite embarrassed. "It's the hospital director, her condition isn't good. She's also been admitted to this hospital."
"I ran into Brother Qiuran downstairs and found out you were here too, so I came up to check on you."
I sat up agitated. "What happened to the headmistress? What's wrong with her health?"
Xu Hu seemed to have finally made up his mind and told me everything he knew.
"The hospital director's mother has a tumor on her chest, in a very dangerous location, and the doctors are hesitant to operate. And..."
"And what?" I asked impatiently, at a point where I couldn't think straight.
"And even if surgery is possible, it would cost at least 300 million. That's not something we can afford."
Three million is indeed not a small amount.
For orphanages, this is an inherently significant figure.
"That's why the headmistress asked us to keep it from you. She knows that once you find out, you'll do everything you can to stop it. But that would force you to do things you don't want to do."
Even at this point, the headmistress is still thinking about me.
Her own body was already giving out, but she was still wholeheartedly planning for me.
How could I possibly leave such a hospital director as an unattended mother?
Without thinking, I promised Xu Hu, "I'll figure out the money. As for the doctor... I'll find the best doctor for the hospital director and I'll definitely save her."
I must save her. No matter what I have to do, I will save the headmistress.
When I said these words, the only person I could think of who could help me was Song Yafei.
Perhaps Uncle Feng could do it, but Uncle Feng is too old, and the power he wields may not be as great as Song Yafei's.
Having made up my mind, I confidently told Xu Hu to give him instructions.
"I'll figure out the money and the doctor's issues. You just need to convince the hospital director to cooperate."
"And another thing is that she must never know that I did this."
Otherwise, if she finds out, she'll definitely return the money to me exactly as she did last time.
Even after the matter was resolved, Xu Hu wasn't particularly happy. He looked at me with great concern and complained resentfully.
"Brother Tian, what exactly happened to our orphanage?"
"Aren't we miserable enough? Now you're sick, and so is the headmistress. We're all about to reach our breaking point."
I understand his feelings all too well; it's only through understanding that I realize how inadequate all comforting words are.
But I am certain that the more this is the case, the more the orphanage cannot do without its director, Mother.
Only with the director, Mama, could the orphanage be kept running smoothly.
This strengthened my resolve to save the hospital director.
I know it will be difficult to get money from Song Yafei and find a good doctor.
But even if it's difficult, I have to do it, whatever he asks me to do.
After giving Xu Hu a few instructions, I asked him to go downstairs.
"The headmistress needs someone to take care of her. You should go down now and don't let her find out you came to see me."
Xu Hu nodded repeatedly.
He got up and walked out, then turned back to look at me, as if he wanted to say something but hesitated.
Perhaps he wasn't sure whether telling me this was the right or wrong thing to do.
When Song Yafei returned, her expression was completely different from before.
She had an air of confidence about her, just like she usually did when negotiating with others.
I had a vague idea in my mind. At that moment, I was still very conflicted and didn't know how to bring it up.
Song Yafei sat on the sofa and opened the insulated box she had brought back earlier.
She set up the small table again, moved the food to the hospital bed, then took a stool and sat down, setting out two sets of bowls and chopsticks.
I hesitated, unsure how to begin, and slowly ate my food while pondering how to start the conversation with her.
"Xu Hu was here just now?" Song Yafei suddenly blurted out.
I was eating when I suddenly froze, bit my chopsticks, and turned to look at her.
She said that one sentence with a blank expression, without even glancing at me.
But I seemed to understand it instantly.
No wonder she looked so confident; she already knew there were some things I absolutely had to do.
She now has leverage to negotiate with me.
She's waiting for me to back down so she can get revenge for yelling at me and for threatening to divorce me.
I think I know very well what she's going to do.
I put down my chopsticks and looked at her very seriously. "You can get a doctor to save your mother, the headmistress, right?"
Song Yafei nodded and told me very clearly, "Yes, I can."
So she was just waiting for me to give in to her.
Song Yafei's expression remained unchanged, but my feelings were complicated. I lowered my head, pursed my lips, and tried to mentally prepare myself.
I know very well that this time, bowing my head may mean I'll never be able to raise my head in front of him again.
"The doctors who perform surgery on the hospital director have very tight schedules and need to make an appointment in advance," Song Yafei reminded me.
Everything is reminding me that I should ask for help as early as possible.
The more she said that, the more nervous I became.
But even knowing the consequences, I couldn't just leave the headmistress to fend for herself.
I finally made up my mind.
"What can I do to help you?"
Song Yafei looked as if she had expected this, and said condescendingly, "It's very simple. When you're asking for a favor, you should act like you're asking for a favor."
What does it look like?
He begged her humbly.
My body trembled uncontrollably, and I forced myself to kneel down before her, enduring the discomfort.
Please!
"Please save the hospital director."
My subservience seemed to please her. "I want to see you at home tomorrow."
