Chapter 40 Beyond the Gate of Light and Unknown Perils

Chapter 40 Beyond the Gate of Light and Unknown Perils

The moment Huanmo and the others stepped into the circular gate of light, they felt a strange and warm power envelop them. A blinding light flashed before their eyes, followed by a blurry scene. As the light gradually dissipated, they found themselves in a completely unfamiliar environment.

This place appeared to be a vast forest, surrounded by ancient trees whose lush foliage blocked out the sun, allowing only dappled light to filter through. A fresh, faintly floral scent filled the air, a stark contrast to the perilous ruins they had encountered earlier. However, Huanmo and his companions dared not lower their guard. After all, they had just escaped the encirclement of the mysterious figures using this portal; no one knew what dangers lurked within this seemingly idyllic place.

Huanmo cautiously surveyed his surroundings, pondering to himself, "Where has this portal led us? Is it a temporary refuge, or another perilous trap?" He knew that in this chaotic Warring States period, hidden dangers lurked everywhere, and he must not be deceived by appearances. Although the pain in his back seemed to have eased somewhat under the influence of this strange power, his body remained weak. Yet, he had to be vigilant and responsible for everyone's safety.

Wanru clung tightly to Huanmo, curiously surveying the forest. While her eyes showed amazement at the new environment, they held even more worry. "Huanmo, it looks so quiet here. Could something even more terrifying be waiting for us?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

The man in white held a jade flute, his expression grave as he observed his surroundings. He too was pondering the possibilities beyond the portal: "This place is quite strange. This forest seems peaceful and serene, yet it exudes an unusual aura. We must proceed with caution." As he spoke, he gently stroked the jade flute in his hand, as if drawing strength from this familiar object to cope with the unknown.

Qingwan clutched the spirit pearl tightly. Its light shone brightly in the dim forest, illuminating a small area for them. She was slightly out of breath; the fierce battle in the ruins had severely depleted her spiritual energy, and she hadn't fully recovered. "Hopefully, this spirit pearl can sense danger beforehand, and doesn't lead us into trouble again unknowingly," Qingwan murmured to herself, her forehead covered in fine beads of sweat.

The white tiger paced back and forth, its blue eyes warily scanning the surrounding woods. It would occasionally stop, pausing to listen intently to any sounds coming from its vicinity. As a protector of everyone, it was always ready to deal with any potential threats.

The group proceeded cautiously through the forest, the rustling of fallen leaves beneath their feet sounding exceptionally clear in the stillness. With each step, they felt as if they were venturing into an unknown abyss, their tension growing ever stronger.

Suddenly, a melodious flute melody drifted from the depths of the forest. The flute music was gentle and ethereal, as if it possessed a captivating magic that made people intoxicated by it.

Huanmo and the others were startled and instantly became alert. "This flute music is suspicious, everyone be careful!" Huanmo whispered, clenching his fists as he prepared to deal with any potential danger.

Wanru covered her ears tightly, trying to resist the allure of the flute music. "This sound is so strange, I feel dizzy," she said, frowning and looking uncomfortable.

The man in white paused slightly, sensing an ancient rhythm within the flute's melody, subtly connected to his knowledge of musical scales. "This flute music is not simple; do not let it cloud your judgment," he warned the others, concentrating his attention to uncover the secrets behind the music.

Qingwan closed her eyes tightly and used all her magic to try and build a mental protective barrier for everyone, resisting the influence of the flute music. However, she found that the magic of the flute music seemed to be far beyond her imagination, and her protective barrier seemed somewhat fragile in front of it.

The white tiger was also affected by the flute music. A hint of confusion flashed in its blue eyes, but it quickly came to its senses. It roared angrily, as if to show off to the flute player hidden in the shadows.

As the flute music continued, the scenery in the forest began to change. The once still trees seemed to come alive, their branches and leaves swaying slowly, as if dancing to the music. Then, a group of women dressed in colorful clothes emerged from the depths of the forest. They were beautiful and graceful, holding various musical instruments, playing and dancing as they slowly walked towards Huanmo and the others.

Huanmo's eyes widened, his mind filled with doubt: "Who are these women? Why did they suddenly appear here?" His gaze swept back and forth between the women, trying to find some clues.

Looking at the women, Wanru's fear lessened slightly, as they didn't seem like the dangerous people she had encountered before. "They look so beautiful, could they be here to help us?" she murmured to herself.

The man in white remained solemn, knowing full well that in this unfamiliar environment, any seemingly pleasant appearance could conceal danger. "Don't be deceived by appearances; let's see what they're up to first," he whispered to the others.

Qingwan continued to maintain the protective barrier of the spirit orb, even though it was already on the verge of collapse, she still hoped to buy everyone more time to resist.

When the women in colorful clothes reached a spot not far from the group, they stopped. The woman in the lead smiled and said, "Welcome, guests from afar, to this mysterious forest. We are the guardians of this forest. We have heard of your hardships and have come to help you."

Huanmo and the others exchanged glances, their hearts filled with suspicion. "Help? You're really here to help us?" Huanmo asked, his tone clearly distrustful.

The woman smiled gently and said, "Of course it's true. We have been guarding this forest for many years and know many of the secrets of this world. If you trust us, you can come with us to a place where we may be able to resolve your doubts and help you get out of your predicament."

The group was hesitant, partly because they desperately needed to escape their current predicament, and partly because they were suspicious of the woman who had suddenly appeared.

Just as everyone hesitated, suddenly, a noisy sound came from another direction in the forest, as if a large group of people were rushing towards them.

Everyone was startled and turned to look. The grove of trees was knocked askew, and a group of mysterious people dressed in black appeared before them—the same people who had ambushed them in the ruins earlier.
