Chapter 429 Shen Fuhan Who Can Speak
Chapter 429 Shen Fuhan Who Can Speak
The family of three embraced for a moment when someone suddenly knocked on the door.
Wen Jiayue snapped out of her daze, quickly stepped out of Shen Fuhan's embrace, and lowered her eyes to straighten her clothes.
Just as Shen Fuhan was about to ask what was wrong, Shen Funian's voice came through.
"Brother, it's nothing serious. You and your wife can catch up. Don't worry about anything else!"
Immediately afterwards, they heard Shen Funian reprimanding the guards in a low voice.
"Doesn't he know my brother is busy? He's so clueless!" she said indignantly. "No wonder he's a guard trained by Ling He, just as stubborn as him!"
Suddenly someone shushed them, saying, "Let's not say anything more and let's go."
It was Xiao Suye; the footsteps of the three gradually faded into the distance.
Silence fell over the room as well.
Wen Jiayue was at a loss for words when Shen Fuhan coughed lightly a few times.
As if unable to control himself, the sound gradually grew louder.
Wen Jiayue frowned as she looked at him and gently patted his back.
Ever since he met Shen Fuhan, he has been coughing. Could it be that the poison from the Bone-Corroding Powder hasn't dissipated yet?
But a month has passed, and it should have been fine by now.
Shen Fuhan finally stopped coughing. Seeing her worried expression, he comforted her, "I'm fine, A-Yue, don't worry."
“You’re lying,” Wen Jiayue said, pursing her lips. “Is there still some lingering poison?”
“No,” Shen Fuhan helped her sit down, and after a moment of hesitation, he said, “She just hasn’t rested well. She’ll be fine in a while.”
His tone was casual, as if it were no big deal, but Wen Jiayue was on the verge of tears.
"Has this left you with a chronic condition?"
Shen Fuhan hesitated for a moment, then nodded. Since she was going to find out sooner or later, he decided not to keep it from her.
To reassure her, he immediately said, "It's just a cough, only two or three times a day... Are you going to dislike me, Yue?"
He turned the tables on her, and Wen Jiayue glared at him.
"What exactly happened?" she asked anxiously. "You could have rested properly, did coming to see me cause you to fall ill?"
To ease her guilt, Shen Fuhan shook her head.
"No, it's because the matter of the Eldest Princess has taken too much of my time. Also, before I came to see you, someone drugged me, which is why my condition started to worsen and I developed a cough. It has nothing to do with you."
Wen Jiayue was stunned: "What drug? Who put it in?"
Shen Fuhan said calmly, "Cai'er used sleeping pills and aphrodisiacs on her, and I have already beaten her to death."
“She…” Wen Jiayue was even more astonished, “How could this be…”
She said guiltily, "My third sister reminded me, but I didn't take it seriously. If only I had listened to her... How could things have turned out like this?"
Shen Fuhan immediately said, "She hid it too well; even I didn't notice it in time. It's not your fault."
He had initially suspected something was amiss, but lacked evidence, so he simply allowed her to marry on her own.
Unexpectedly, Wu Wei was always away from home, and their wedding was repeatedly postponed.
Cai'er behaved herself and showed no signs of anything amiss, so he lowered his guard, not expecting that someone would take advantage of his vulnerability.
Seeing that Wen Jiayue was still lost in thought about the past, Shen Fuhan interrupted her thoughts.
"As for drugging, I have no idea what Cai'er did to me back then, but don't worry, Yue, I can guarantee that she didn't succeed."
Wen Jiayue glared at him: "Who asked that?"
Shen Fuhan gripped her hand tightly.
"I'm afraid you'll overthink things, just as you're afraid I'll overthink things."
Wen Jiayue then understood what he meant and nestled gently in his arms.
She mimicked his words: "I believe you, just as you believe me."
Shen Fuhan lifted her chin: "Parroting."
He lowered his head, and Wen Jiayue's eyelashes trembled slightly. Just as she was about to close her eyes, she suddenly caught a glimpse of Zhaozhao out of the corner of her eye.
She obediently held the vase, which was taller than her, her big eyes blinking as she looked at them with curiosity.
Wen Jiayue then remembered that her daughter was still there and quickly pushed Shen Fuhan away.
She whispered a reminder: "Zhao Zhao."
Shen Fuhan coughed lightly, also feeling somewhat uncomfortable.
Seeing that her parents were silent, Zhao Zhao walked up to them, patted her belly, and said, "Zhao Zhao is hungry."
Shen Fuhan asked, "Is A-Yue hungry?"
Wen Jiayue nodded, and after Zhao Zhao reminded her, she also felt that her stomach was empty.
Shen Fuhan then picked up Zhaozhao and held Wen Jiayue's hand with his other hand.
"Go and have your meal."
The three of them went outside, and the sound of flowing water was crisp and pleasant.
Wen Jiayue looked up and saw a small bridge over a stream, with pavilions and towers in the courtyard, all exquisitely beautiful.
She asked curiously, "Is this an inn?"
“No, it’s a villa I just bought,” Shen Fuhan explained. “You weren’t resting well at the inn, so I bought a mansion.”
Wen Jiayue gave a belated "Oh," and then asked, "When are we going back to Beijing?"
"It's all up to you."
Wen Jiayue was eager to return home; with the New Year fast approaching, she wanted to spend it at the Marquis's residence.
But Pei Huaijin's matter hasn't been resolved yet; at least his body needs to be found first.
Wen Jiayue then said, "Let's do it after we're done with this."
Shen Fuhan replied, "I have already sent people to search the area below the cliff. The guard knocked on the door just now, presumably to discuss this matter."
"So fast?" Wen Jiayue asked. "How long did I sleep?"
"Seven hours."
Wen Jiayue thought to herself, it's normal that it took so long to find Pei Huaijin.
She suddenly remembered another person—Pei Shijing.
She quickly asked, "Where is Xiao Jing?"
"Her?" Shen Fuhan frowned. "She'll be temporarily placed in the woodshed and returned to the Duke of Qi's mansion after we return to the capital."
He originally didn't want to do this and planned to bury it somewhere random.
But it's fine if the Duke and Duchess of Qi see their daughter's corpse; this is the consequence of treason.
“Xiao Jing helped me a lot along the way,” Wen Jiayue sighed. “I want to respect her last wishes and bury her in Yangzhou.”
Shen Fuhan replied without hesitation, "Okay."
Wen Jiayue asked curiously, "Aren't you going to ask why? After all, she's Pei Huaijin's accomplice."
“Speak if you want to, I won’t force you,” Shen Fuhan said in a low voice. “If what has happened in the past month has hurt you, it’s better not to ask.”
Wen Jiayue's nose tingled: "How come you've suddenly become so eloquent?"
Shen Fuhan touched her face: "I just wanted to express what I've been thinking, so you would understand my feelings."
Wen Jiayue couldn't help but hug him and whispered, "It should be like this from now on. I don't want to keep guessing."
Shen Fuhan nodded and said, "Okay."
"Oh dear, Zhao Zhao is still here! Big brother and sister-in-law, what are you doing?"
Shen Funian's voice came from not far away.
Wen Jiayue, flustered and confused, pushed Shen Fuhan away and looked at Shen Funian.
"Niannian, what are you doing here?"
She hadn't even noticed that Shen Funian was there, and forgot to ask Shen Fuhan.
Shen Funian sighed softly, hiding behind Xiao Suye as she spoke.
"I didn't want to come, but my older brother insisted that I come. He even cried and begged me, so I had no choice but to come."
Wen Jiayue chuckled: "Stop dreaming. I'm hungry, come eat with me."
