Chapter 25 Xishan Temple
Chapter 25 Xishan Temple
Last time, we talked about Dugu Yu staying in the Exiled Immortal Tower. Li Yi was also busy. What was Li Yi busy with? There is a poem to prove it:
The moon sets, the stars go out, and the red crows rise. There was an east wind blowing in the small building last night.
I don’t understand the hardships others suffer, but I alone enjoy the freedom and ease.
The poem is very simple. It is about how classmate Li Yi was shameless and acted like a hooligan last night. He only cared about his own pleasure and didn't care about other people's lives! Two words: beast! Four words: worse than pigs and dogs! Anyway, in the morning, Li Yi got up and was helped by Yue'er and Xing'er to wash and dress. He glanced at Shi Yu who was still mumbling on the bed and said, "You should take good care of yourself. I will go to Xishan Temple to seek the true scriptures and come back to teach you my unique skills!"
Listen, everyone, is this human language? Everyone understands what Li Yi means, so I won’t translate it for fear of being blocked!
The three people who were studying in Beijing, the indomitable team, gathered in front of the west gate of Beijing City and took a car to Xishan Temple. Of course, on the way, the three of them vowed that they would never give up until they achieved their goal, and they were ready to die if they heard the truth in the morning!
Twenty miles is not far, but at the foot of the mountain, the car can't go up the mountain, and the three princes need to walk up the mountain, which is a bit hard for the two princes of Yuqi. Nangongqi said that he would find a sedan chair and someone to carry it up. Li Yi took a look at Shangxi Mountain, which was not very high, and said, "Two brothers, what are we doing here?"
"Nonsense, of course it's to learn the Vajra Divine Skill!"
Dugu Yu scolded, "Stop talking nonsense! We are here to worship Buddha!" Li Yi nodded and said, "Brother Yu, your opinion is great! Brother Qi, the three of us are sincere today and have come to visit Master Zhengyuan of Xishan Temple to ask for advice on Buddhism! We are not here to learn any Vajra magic skills! This is a quiet place in Buddhism, don't talk nonsense!"
Nangong Qi understood what the two meant, and quickly slapped himself and said, "I was talking nonsense! Amitabha, Amitabha! Just as you two brothers said, the three of us are practicing Buddhism, and we occasionally encounter something that we don't understand, so we come here to ask Master Zhengyuan for guidance!"
Li Yi nodded with satisfaction and said, "Since we are here sincerely to seek advice, if we take a sedan chair up, wouldn't it be inappropriate?" Nangong nodded quickly and said, "It's definitely inappropriate, it's definitely inappropriate, we should go up step by step!"
After going through untold hardships, of course this was for Yu Qi and the others. For Li Yi, this was just a hike. However, unlike climbing mountains in his previous life, there were no paved stone steps or plank roads. The mountain road to the West Mountain was indeed a little dilapidated.
The three of them arrived outside the gate of Xishan Temple and saw red walls and green tiles. The outer walls of the temple were swept clean. When they approached the gate and looked up, they saw a couplet with golden characters hanging on the door.
The first couplet reads: I stay in the western mountain and practice Buddhism day and night.
The second line reads: Hearing the cock-crow, I rise up and practice martial arts regardless of the weather.
After reading the couplet, Li Yi smiled and said, "It seems that we have come to the right place. This is indeed a temple opened by martial monks." Li Yi thought to himself: It seems that the monk who built this Xishan Temple is really uncultured. He has the nerve to hang such a vulgar couplet at the gate! Wait for me to think of a good couplet for you, just as a gift in exchange for the Vajra Divine Power! The three of them smiled at each other and had a tacit understanding with each other.
Before entering the door, Li Yi reminded: "My two brothers, don't speak loudly when you enter the temple, so as not to disturb the quietness of the Buddhist temple. Also, greet the monks and kneel before the Buddha to show our piety!" Yu Qi and the other two nodded in agreement, chanting Buddhist mantras all the way and walked into Xishan Temple.
Although Li Yi did not believe in Buddhism in his previous life, he was a theist. He believed that the Creator created the world and established various natural laws. Li Yi did not believe in other religions. In his opinion, all religions were established to encourage people to be good, and their original intentions were good. However, they were assimilated by the secular world and lost their original appearance. However, Li Yi's parents in his previous life believed in Buddhism, which had some influence on him. He still had a certain understanding of Buddhism. He had memorized several Buddhist scriptures and knew some Buddhist allusions.
We walked into Xishan Temple and visited the temple. It is a large temple with three entrances. The first thing we saw was the Mountain Gate Hall, where two gatekeepers were enshrined. Then there was the Heavenly King Hall, where the Four Heavenly Kings were enshrined. After that was the Main Hall, where Tathagata Buddha and three Bodhisattvas were enshrined in the middle, and the Eighteen Arhats on both sides. The three of us could not go in any further and were stopped by the guarding monks.
Nangong Qi wanted to step forward to argue, but was stopped by Li Yi and Dugu Yu and dragged out of the main hall. The two of them scolded Nangong Qi in a low voice, "I told you to be pious before entering! Why do you still want to cause trouble!"
"We can't even see the abbot, so how can we ask..." Li Yi gestured to Nangong Qi to shut up. Nangong Qi reacted and whispered, "How can we ask questions when we can't even see the person!" Li Yi looked at Dugu Yu and said, "If you had gone back to the mansion yesterday to get a visiting card, the three of us wouldn't have been unable to see anyone!"
Dugu Yu said, "Can you blame me for this? I didn't go back for a reason. I told you all about it! You were so anxious that you had to come here today! Now you can't see Master Zhengyuan and you blame me for it. This is not my fault!"
Nangong Qi said impatiently: "What should we do now? The three of us go back? Get the visiting card first? Brother Yu doesn't want to take it, I'll go find one, that should be fine." Li Yi gestured to the two of them to be patient and said: "How about this, let's go to the main hall to burn incense and pray to the Buddha, maybe there will be an opportunity!"
Nangong Qi said unhappily, "Forget it! If prayer is useful, there won't be poor people in this world! Brother Li, you don't think we are stupid, do you?" Dugu Yu asked, "Brother Li, do you have a plan?" Li Yi nodded, and Nangong Qi asked, "What plan?"
Dugu Yu said dissatisfiedly: "You won't understand even if I tell you! You just follow us in later, do what I do, don't worry about others! Don't just think about causing trouble!" "How did I cause trouble...!"
Nangong Qi was about to retort when a monk came over. The three of them bowed and chanted the Buddha's name. Li Yi stepped forward and asked, "Master, the three of us would like to go and ask for incense. I don't know what the process is. Can you give me some advice?"
The monk smiled and said, "Oh, so the three donors want to buy incense. Then follow me. I will take you there." "Amitabha, thank you, Master."
Then Li Yi gave a wink, and Yu Qi and the other two followed him to burn incense together. After paying the incense money and asking for three incense sticks, the three of them entered the main hall again. Li Yi was in the middle, and Yu Qi and the other two were on both sides. The three of them knelt and kowtowed. Li Yi put his hands together and began to pray, and Yu Qi and the other two also followed suit, closing their eyes and pretending. The three of them gave a lot of incense money, and their clothes, speech and behavior were all extraordinary. So while they were bowing and praying, there was a monk beating a wooden fish and chanting scriptures on the side.
Li Yi heard the monks chanting and felt the rhythm of the monks beating the wooden fish, and slowly got into the state. Li Yi was still kneeling in prayer, but he was speaking eloquently. Yu Qi and the other two beside him were so close that they could hear him clearly, but they could not understand what he was saying at all. They had no idea what Li Yi was muttering.
It is normal not to understand! Li Yi did not know what he was reciting, because he was singing! He was singing the Great Compassion Mantra! In Sanskrit! In his previous life, his parents would burn incense and worship Buddha on the first and fifteenth day of every lunar month. At that time, this Buddhist song would be played at home. Over time, Li Yi also learned it. He only heard him singing:
"Namo dhāra dāna dāra yāya Namo āri va ru ka tī shābhāya bodhisattva va yāya
Mahasattva Poya Maha Kalu Ni Kaye Om Sapora Fayedus Dana Dasha
Namo Xijilidu Yimeng Aliye Bolujidishi Foluolengtuopo Namo Narojinchi
Ahili Maha Padusami Sapo Atadu Supeng Asayun Sapo Sado Namo Sado..."
These were all Sanskrit with phonetic notation, and Li Yi really had no idea what they meant, so he just followed the rhythm of the wooden fish. But it didn't matter that he sang, the Buddha's light suddenly appeared in the main hall, the Tathagata Buddha in the middle seemed to be looking down, the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva on the left seemed to have bright eyes, staring at Li Yi who was kneeling below, the other Bodhisattvas and Arhats flashed golden light, as if they were listening, the whole main hall was shrouded in golden light!
Yu Qi and the other two beside Li Yi were stunned. What was going on? What was Li Yi doing? Was he considered a demon by the Buddha and was going to be killed here? Or was Brother Li praying to the Buddha and was heard by the Buddha? What was he praying for? Was he not going to learn the Vajra Magical Skills so that he could be invincible in the future? Then the Buddha would have to kill him with one palm!
The monk who was beating the wooden fish at the side had originally closed his eyes and was chanting, but he was dazzled by the golden light and opened his eyes. When he saw the scene in front of him, he knelt down on the ground. He stopped chanting the scriptures and stopped beating the wooden fish. He just watched stupidly. Li Yi found that his singing of the "Great Compassion Mantra" had a miraculous effect. He stood up, picked up the wooden hammer that had fallen on the ground, placed the wooden fish in front of him, sat cross-legged in meditation, and continued to sing while beating the wooden fish.
On the other hand, the situation in the main hall alarmed the entire temple. Someone ran to the meditation room of the abbot, Master Zhengyuan, to report it. After calling for a long time, no one answered. When he pushed the door open, he saw that there was no one inside.
However, just as Li Yi finished singing the first time and was about to sing the second time, a monk wearing a brocade robe and holding a magic wand appeared in front of Li Yi out of thin air. Li Yi guessed that the person in front of him was Master Zhengyuan, but the Buddhist song had already begun and he could not sing only halfway, so he did not stop and ignored Master Zhengyuan.
Master Zhengyuan was not angry. He looked up at the Buddha statue and chanted the Buddha's name, "Amitabha!" Then he sat in meditation opposite Li Yi, bowing with one hand and counting the rosary with the other. He listened to Li Yi's Buddhist songs. The magic wand that he had released stood beside him by itself, flashing golden light together with the Buddha statue.
It was not until Li Yi finished singing for the second time that all the Buddha's light in the hall converged on Li Yi, directly turning him into a golden man. Gradually, the golden color was absorbed into Li Yi's body. He slowly opened his eyes and saw the kind-looking old monk smiling at him. He quickly stood up and saluted, saying, "Amitabha, I am Li Yi Li Xiuyuan, nice to meet Master Zhengyuan."
When he looked up again, he saw that the old monk was standing opposite him, still smiling. However, Li Yi did not hear the old monk standing up at all, as if Master Zhengyuan was standing opposite him.
Li Yi thought: This is a master, he must be a master! We must seize the opportunity and be careful in what we say and do! At this time, the monk who knelt beside him hurriedly said: "Abbot, he, this donor..."
Master Zhengyuan waved his hand and said with a smile, "Nothing, I saw it all. Yuanping, go tell the donor waiting outside that a distinguished guest is visiting today, so I can't talk to her about Buddhism. Please ask her to come back another day. If she is unhappy, please ask her to burn incense in the main hall, and she will leave by herself."
Monk Yuanping took the order and left. Master Zhengyuan turned to Li Yi and said with a smile: "This donor, you have a connection with my Buddha. Why don't you go to Lao Na's meditation room and chat with me?"
Li Yi naturally wanted to go. Yu Qi and the other two who were dumbfounded beside him quickly stood up and wanted to go together. Master Zhengyuan said with a smile: "Amitabha, I think these two donors seem to be interested in my Buddhist body protection magic?" When these words came out, the three of them were stunned. Could it be that this old monk could see through people's hearts?
Master Zhengyuan smiled and said, "No, I can't see through people's hearts. This is just one of the Buddhist methods, telepathy, which can roughly understand other people's thoughts!" Li Yi thought to himself: Damn, this is not seeing through people's hearts! Suddenly realizing that his thoughts might be seen through, he quickly collected his mind.
Yu Qi and the other two didn't know how to answer, so they froze in place. Master Zheng Yuan smiled and said, "How about this, I'll ask someone to take you two donors to the place where the monks practice in the back mountain to see if you two donors can gain anything?"
Yu Qi and the other man nodded repeatedly. Zhengyuan called a little monk to lead the two to the back mountain, while Li Yi followed Master Zhengyuan to his meditation room.
The two of them sat down, and Master Zhengyuan said, "What is the purpose of Mr. Li's visit to my Xishan Temple?" Li Yi smiled and said, "Master, didn't you see through it just now?" Zhengyuan smiled and said, "No, I can only see through the minds of ordinary people. Mr. Li has made great achievements in Confucianism and Taoism, and he has a golden light protecting his body. I can't see through it."
